Have you watched Netflix’s hit show Adolescence?
We have and we were absolutely hooked! It’s an incredible thriller about a thirteen-year-old boy who was accused of murdering his female classmate. We follow along from the time the police raided his house to the time up until his Dad’s birthday. As we watch, we can start to see that all the secrets that were supposed to remain hidden come to light.
This episode does contain some spoilers, so if you don’t want any of those, go watch the show and then come back to the podcast. However, we’ll mostly be diving deeper into the topic of the incel community. The show does an amazing job of showing and not telling us how this community can infiltrate our kids' lives, but in this episode, we’re going to talk about how incel culture has affected our lives and what you can do to stop the spread of these monstrous ideologies.
Let’s dive in!
Adolescence sheds light on how violent communities can indoctrinate young boys through social media. The main character, Jamie, is only thirteen, but he is accused of murdering a female classmate over bullying he faced on social media. But as the show goes on, we start to see Will verbalize dangerous dog whistles that prove that he may have started to deeply resent women and want to punish them in a violent way.
Incel communities are typically made up of men who claim that they are “involuntarily celibate” and meet online to discuss their growing hatred of women. This hatred escalates to planned acts of violence that affect the women around them and shake their local communities to their core.
In this week’s episode, we dive deeper into each episode of Adolescence and explain the real-world implications of each character's actions. We also discuss what we can do to stop the spread of these ideologies. No one wants to lose their sons and brothers to a violent misogynistic group, and that’s exactly why we have to talk about it before it’s too late.
